Magdalena Gamayo, a 1924 born Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA) recipient, is a skilled weaver of inabel cloth, the traditional cotton fabric mentioned in the famous Ilocano epic Biag ni Lam-ang and bartered for gold in the Galleon Trade.

Works

Native to the northern Philippines, the Ilocano people weave traditional textiles by hand called inabel. It is well known for its complex designs, resilience, and cultural importance. Typically, inabel fabrics are colored with natural dyes and woven from cotton that is cultivated nearby. Weaving is a labor-intensive activity that has been handed down through the centuries, frequently on wooden looms.
